NY City Opera is headed into mediation

Well, we knew this was coming ...
NY City Opera is scheduled to begin mediation Monday with its two labor unions, in a bid to resolve a bitter contract dispute threatening to disrupt performances planned across the city this season, opera and union officials said.

The opera company — which aims to turn the orchestra and chorus members essentially into freelancers, paying them a fraction of their previous pay — declared an impasse in negotiations on Dec. 1 and unilaterally imposed a new contract.

Risa Heller, an opera spokeswoman, and Alan Gordon, of the American Guild of Musical Artists, which represents the chorus, said mediation was scheduled to begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. ...

Almost anytime I think of NY City Opera and the desperate predicament that it's currently in, I see the face of Beverly Sills and can't help but wonder what America's Queen of Opera would say if she were still around - watching the company she worked tirelessly for, crumble to bits. Perhaps someone should blow this cover up to poster size and hand George Steel a copy...

I doubt it would do much good. I think the only thing able to snap him back to reality would be if this visage came to him as his ghost of Christmas-past.
