Renée Fleming's topless performance ... almost

As much as it pains me to link something from the NY Post - they were one of the only news outlets that wrote about Renée Fleming's master class at the Juilliard School.

James Jorden of the NY Post writes:
In her first New York master class Tuesday night, Renée Fleming proved she could teach perhaps even better than she can sing.

A capacity audience in the Juilliard School's Peter Jay Sharp Theater greeted the soprano with warm applause. Unlike her mannered performance in
Der Rosenkavalier at the Met the night before, here -- in a 90-minute session with four 20-something students -- Fleming looked relaxed and engaged.

Master classes are catnip to opera buffs -- with over-the-hill divas swathed in furs and turbans dispensing gossipy tidbits along with advice. But the 50-year-old Fleming is in the summer of her career. Her new CD and DVD were advertised in the program, and her simple outfit -- peach silk top, full skirt and boots -- looked more Oprah than opera.

She did share an anecdote about her student days at Juilliard, when, for a production of Gian Carlo Menotti's
Tamu-Tamu, the composer demanded she sing topless. As Fleming gratefully recalled it, school president Joseph W. Polisi brokered a more modest compromise: a sheer body stocking.
